2006 IABC Nashville Student Scholarship
 
     
 
The IABC Nashville Student Scholarship is funded by the Nashville Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. Through this program, a scholarship of $1000 is available to eligible communication majors at accredited four-year colleges and universities in Tennessee and southern Kentucky. The scholarship is to be used for academic purposes including, but not limited to, payment of tuition, registration fees, and cost of books and supplies.
 
     
 
Selection Criteria
 
To be considered for the IABC/Nashville Student Scholarship, you must:
  • Be enrolled at an accredited four-year university in Tennessee or at Western Kentucky University
  • Be a full-time, degree-seeking junior or senior in the fall semester 2005
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better
  • First consideration will be given to applicants majoring in public relations, broadcasting, journalism, advertising, graphic design of other communication-related fields. However, applicants in other academic disciplines may also be considered if an interest in communication is reflected in the student's academic courses, internship experience or involvement in student organizations.
 
     
 
If you are chosen as a finalist, you will be asked to participate in an interview conducted by the members of the IABC/Nashville scholarship committee. In addition, you must provide proof of your full-time enrollment and GPA.

How and When to Apply

To apply for the IABC/Nashville Student Scholarship, you must submit the following items by April 25, 2006:
  • A completed Student Scholarship Application -

  • An original copy of your current transcript
  • A 250-500 word essay which explains how your college experience (academic studies, activities, internships, etc.) has helped you prepare for a career in communication and how you view your future role in communication.
  • All materials submitted electronically as email attachments should be prepared using any version of Microsoft Word.

2003 IABC Nashville Scholarship Winner was:
Emily Pickard, Austin Peay State University
 
Writing always came naturally to me," says Emily. "I wrote my first story for my mother when I was in the second grade."
 
As a public relations major at Austin Peay, Emily is learning to polish her exceptional writing talent as she pursues a career in communications. She is the Secretary/Treasurer of the student IABC, and serves as the Vice President of Public Relations for the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSA). Already a proven leader, Emily delegates student group projects, including an extensive campaign for the Humane Society.
 
Emily has launched multiple marketing/member relations projects during her internship with Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative, including printed collateral and advertisements.
"Even with all the new communications media available today, I feel you can make the most impact with printed collateral," says Emily. "They just have to be effective enough to grab the reader's attention."
 
As an intern, waitress, mother, IABC officer and full-time student, Emily feels she has developed the necessary management and multi-tasking skills to prepare her for the future.
 
"Being a member and officer in the IABC has helped prepare me for my future," says Emily. "The leadership skills I have developed from this experience will benefit me for the rest of my life."
 
     
 
2002 IABC Nashville Scholarship Winners were:
Kathryn Michelle Clabo, Vanderbilt University
 
Our top $1000 scholarship winner is Vanderbilt student Kathryn Michelle Clabo. Her major is Communication of the Natural Sciences. Kathryn is one of Vanderbilt's top 50 rising seniors based on academic performance, leadership and community service. She served as a research and public outreach intern for Vanderbilt Brain Institute and as an intern with CNN. Following graduation in May 2003, she hopes to have a career in medical journalism where she will use here training to communicate complex science and medical news to the lay public. 
 
     
 
Elizabeth McDaniel, Vanderbilt University
 
An additional scholarship for $250 was awarded to Elizabeth McDaniel, also a communications student at Vanderbilt. After her May 2003 graduation, Elizabeth expects to work for Healthstream, Inc. as a communications and investor relations intern. 
 
     
 
2001 IABC Nashville Scholarship Winners were:
 
Earl Isaac (Zac) Wright, University of Tennessee at Knoxville
 
Zac says, "I have been fortunate enough to study in two countries and work at a local PR firm and as a member of the national press staff of a presidential campaign."
 
The academic environment of the UTK campus has provided Zac with a diverse education. He has taken two honors seminars, two honors classes, and a University Honors course while at UT.
He was particularly excited about and opportunity afforded him by the University of Tennessee Journalism Department to study in Scotland. "As an exchange student at Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland, I took classes in public relations, internal journalism, and international law and politics. I researched the cultural ramifications of American programming broadcast on British television. While there, I traveled to Brussels and presented my research findings at a consortium at the European Union. Later, I attended a press conference held by the European Union spokesperson."
 
Zac has served as a part of the UT Student Government Association Freshman Council, as an SGA Senator, and as the Undergraduate Academic Council Parliamentarian, the UAC College of Communications Representative, and the UAC Public Relations Chair, as the IFC Greek Week Public Relations Chair, and in his fraternity chapter as Public Relations Chair and Scholarship chair as well as Membership Director for the College Democrats.
 
Zac plans to graduate from UT in December 2002. With a 3.86 GPA, he has been on the UT Dean's List every semester and is a member of the National Dean's List. He also received the National Collegiate Scholars Award and is a member of the UT Honors Program and a member of the Golden Key National Honors Society.
 
He worked as a member of the press staff on the Gore/Lieberman campaign and interned at a private public relations firm in Knoxville where he wrote and edited press releases and client newsletters. He plans to work in PR in Washington, D.C.
 
     
 
Leslie Rae Bedo, Western Kentucky University
 
Leslie is a student at Western Kentucky University and served on the student body as the Executive Vice President of Student Government, on the Board of Directors for Western's Student Life Foundation, renovating the campus residence halls, Student Government President and student regent and a member of Phi Beta Lamda, a business organization that has enabled her to compete nationally in impromptu speaking.
 
Her current job is with B & E Web Design as the Sales and Production Manager, where she is responsible for designing web pages. Leslie says, "I want to spend my career as a motivational speaker conducting workshops that demonstrate the principles of communication, provide insight and entertain participants."
